When Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan to the lawyer in the Gospel of Luke, we are supposed to be getting a lesson in the fact that despite the belief among the Pharisees and Sacceduces that their understanding of the faith was the best, that beloning to their inner circle was the only way to relationship with God -- God was actually busy having relationships with precisely the people they destained. And reading it that way makes it easy to think, "well, we're not like those Pharisees. We'd be the Samaritan - the one to reach out, to care, to love." But if there's one this this week of national church drama has shown me, it is that we are both. We are the Samaritan and the Pharisees.
